JUDGES!

OUR SELECTION PROCESS. Each Judge on our panel will read and critique one script per episode. However, each Judge will read and discuss a different play on each broadcast. Meaning that four plays will be discussed over a four episode period. At the end of the four episode period four new scripts will be introduced and the cycle starts again. The first four scripts will either be accepted to move on, or dropped. Those receiving at least three positive votes continue on for possible production. Those with less than three votes are eliminated. At the end of twelve episodes, the remaining plays in consideration will be voted on during episodes thirteen and fourteen and one play will be selected from those for production on stage here at Riprap Studio Theatre and the process starts all over again. Our goal is to produce three or four plays from selected writers per season. In a nutshell, this broadcast allows writers and viewers to be part of the reading and selecting process. A real education. It also creates an audience eager to hear every word our Judges have to say regarding submissions. Thanks for joining us and we look forward to seeing you on KVMD and at the theatre!

KRISTINA CASEY. Artistically, Kristina is an actor, director, writer, producer, singer/songwriter. Currently Kristina is a series regular and shooting "Sirens” in addition to judging with Riprap Entertainment. Kristina acted in, co-directed and co-produced "The Vagina Monologues" Hollywood 2006 at the Directors Guild of America. She is slated to tackle the same in 2007. She has written screenplays and plans to produce, direct, and star in a short she has written this year for Steven Spielberg's "On The Lot". She has studied under Howard Fine, Bobbie Chance and is a graduate of the famed Writer's Bootcamp in Santa Monica, C.A. Other interesting facts about Kristina - she was born and raised in California. She grew up in Central California and moved to the Los Angeles area to get a degree in Hotel and Restaurant management and is classically trained in French Cuisine.

Athletically, Kristina enjoys surfing, tandem surfing, snowboarding, taking her Jeep off road, rollerblading (she’s even been clocked going 40 mph downhill on her blades), horseback riding, and golf. Globally, Kristina has conquered several dialects, speaks French and conversational Spanish. She has traveled the world and was in a French Foreign exchange program at age 17. Because most of her family is from South Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Florida, these dialects are second nature for her. Technically, Kristina is bit of computer geek. She understands and uses Flash, Dreamweaver, PhotoShop, Quark, Illustrator, Microsoft Office. She is very capable in web, print, and presentation design. She's also bit of a tom-boy - she can change the alternator in her Jeep!!

FROM WHENCE WE CAME . . .

At the risk of confusing you I have included below an archive of our humble beginnings in 1999. At our inception, I naively thought that I and my director would be able to read all the scripts that came through our PO Box AND produce the show - HAH! It proved to be rewarding and completely overwhelming. Now, with the assistance of our judges listed above, I have learned to DELEGATE!!! Alas, this is where we started - we are what we were. For a little history (and in tribute to both my father who passed in 2002 and Richard Jepperson - a fabulous writer - who also passed a couple of years ago) and to give a special thanks to those who jumped on board in 1999 when Riprap was but an idea, read on. Thanks!

[Jan 1999] First, understand that I make all final choices. I look for stories that I believe will interest an audience, potential producers and publishers. There will be times when selecting a story becomes difficult and that's when I turn to my Selection Committee. One thing you can count on is that even if I hate a story, at least one other person will read it. If that person has a different opinion then it's off to a third pair of eyes. Get the picture? No secretary is going to dismiss your work. It will be read and either accepted or rejected. I keep the inner works of this committee guarded. Every private company has their secrets and this is one of mine. I would really hate to have the people who are volunteering bombarded with questions from strangers taking up their valuable time. Bottom line - - I will be the person making the final choice. Members of the selection committee are enlisted on a volunteer basis. This membership is by invitation only and these learned individuals are not employees of Riprap Entertainment or Riprap Writers' Playhouse and are not responsible for its content.

Amongst his many credits he has written comedy material for radio, television, videos, films and comedians in Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Canada. Ken has taught hundreds of classes at all grade levels from 12 years old to eighty. Mr. Rock believes "as long as the students can write, classes will work no matter the age level or past writing experience. The product may differ significantly but the process will be the same."

Ken has run workshops for television companies, comedy festivals, writer's circles and groups, schools and libraries. He is resident comedy writing lecturer for the Cologne Comedy School (Germany). For most of the 1980s, Mr. Rock was Chairman, The Comedy Writers Association of Great Britain and in the late 80s he was the Northern Chairman, Writers Guild of Great Britain. From 1988 to 1999 Mr. Rock was the President of the Comedy Writers Association of Great Britain and, as mentioned above, he is currently President and Founder member of The British Society of Comedy Writers, a new professional organization that aims to develop good practice and professionalism among comedy writers, whilst bringing together under a single umbrella the best creative professionals, working to standards of excellence.

The aim of the BSCW is to work closely with the entertainment industry world-wide by providing writers who are trained to the highest standards in comedy and light entertainment.

In 1989 Ken became the first person from western Europe to sell comedy material direct to Czechoslovakian TV. In 1998 Ken ran the first comedy workshop for producers and directors for Nelonen TV, Finland. In 1998 he ran the first comedy writing workshop for African writers in Zimbabwe. Richard Jepperson

Illustrations are the key to communications in a multi-cultural society. Richard Jepperson developed and promulgated this theme in his lecture series as a professor of Communications (1991-1998) at California State Polytechnic University ("Cal-Poly") at Pomona, California. Eighty percent of the students in his classes were "ESL" (English as a Second Language).

Jepperson holds a bachelor's degree in management science from Westminster College in Salt Lake City and an MBA in Telecommunications Management from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. But it was his fascination with the history of the Sioux, inspired by his association with tribal members while consulting on technical development and teaching at the Standing Rock Sioux reservation, at Fort Yates, North Dakota, that sparked Jepperson to write The War of the Mormon Cow.

Jepperson teamed up with Ken Mundie to develop a new concept in Illustrated Books of History. The War of the Mormon Cow: Being The First Part of the Crazy Horse Chronicles, is a great story and accurate history. The Target Audience is Young Adult (14-17) but encompasses everyone interested in the drama of Native American history. It is of special interest to those who teach history in an ESL environment.

Ken Mundie worked as an animation artist for the Disney Studios and as an Illustrator for the Washington Post. Mundie created the Fat Albert series for Bill Cosby and the main title graphics for the original Wild, Wild West TV series. The prominent Western artists, Frederic Remington (1861-1909) and Charles M. Russell (1864-1926) inspired Ken Mundie's work. Indeed, the entire appearance of the book is modeled after the "dime novel" publications of the 1800s, including the artwork and selection of the text font and paper.

Jack Hemingway, the eldest son of Ernest Hemingway and patriarch of America's premier literary family, contributed the foreword, which succinctly sums up the essence of the Crazy Horse Chronicles.

"Perhaps the most difficult writing of all involves attempts to turn legend into a reality we can perceive. To begin with the writer must steep himself completely in the legend so that it becomes real to him. Having done so he then must visualize the events of the legend and portray them in a manner understandable to his audience. This little segment of the history of our native people and their relationship with the white outsiders is an eye opener for anyone who reads it. Richard Jepperson has accomplished a formidable task and embellished it in great part with the aid of the magnificent drawings of his gifted illustrator, Ken Mundie. The reader will find the story of its characters, the young Crazy Horse and Black Robe Woman coming to life as he reads and then achieving a visual reality as he absorbs the beauty of the illustrations. We can only hope there will not be too long a wait for the second and third chronicles."

A Poignant and Passionate Story, August 29, 2000
Reviewer: Sandy from Los Angeles, California
Mr. Jepperson states that The War of the Mormon Cow "is written in the meter and structure of the Sioux language, as Crazy Horse would have told it." The rhythm of said writing has a profound emotional impact. While I have little knowledge of the Sioux Indians, I know the outcome, and it ain't good. This book gave me hope. I have never read a story as seen through Sioux eyes and I found myself hoping that the Sioux would march on to victory! At the very least, I am inspired to learn more about the first inhabitants of America.

While the story revolves around Curly (later Crazy Horse, a great Sioux leader) and Little Mouse (later Black Robe Woman), and their coming of age in tumultuous times of war with settlers marching through their homeland, I am impressed with the interdependence and respect between the Americans and the Sioux. I read, hoping that surely they could work it out!

So many stories about settlers and Indians are made up solely and simplistically of "Good vs. Bad." Mr. Jepperson's story vividly portrays the good and bad on both sides. He describes great Sioux warriors - - made up of both men and women - - fighting to maintain the only life they knew, and of settlers who, out of ignorance, fear, and greed, took the Indians for granted (that's putting it mildly.)

There were no winners in the destruction of the Sioux. The War of the Mormon Cow is the beginning of a sad, thought provoking story, told with tremendous power. The story is sprinkled with beautiful images of Sioux at work and play in day to day life. A lifestyle from which we should take notes and from which we can still learn. A child's/teenager's book? Yes. Worth reading by adults? Absolutely! I can't wait for the second installment!
