Barry M. Putt, Jr., an award-winning writer, has written several screenplays, teleplays, and radio plays that include drama, mystery, comedy, psychological thriller, children's stories, holiday specials designed for animation, and period pieces. He's covered subject matter dealing with adoption, racism, drug abuse, fraternity gang rape, and anorexia nervosa.
In June 2007 Barry's one-act coming-of-age drama TRIANGLE will be performed at the Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival in New York, NY.
Mr. Putt signed a deal in March of 2007 to develop the dark-comedy screenplay SUSHI WITH A STRANGER for the Beverly Hills, CA based film company Omega Entertainment.
In March of 2006, RIMT commissioned and produced Barry's one-act musical A PSYCHEDELIC SERENADE as part of their Off-Off Broadway music theatre festival. The story focuses on a woman who helps her close friend get past a drug-induced state and guides her towards salvation.
From 2005 to 2007, Barry was co-head writer for the episodic, comedy-horror TV show "In the Cellar" which features zany mysteries with loads of magic twists. It currently airs throughout California and in parts of Massachusetts. The final season of the show is scheduled to air during the summer of 2007.
In February, 2005 Mr. Putt was selected for membership with ARTC (American Renaissance Theater Company) of New York City. ARTC is comprised of theatre professionals including playwrights, directors, dramaturgs, actors, and musicians, who, for the past 30 years have helped one another develop new work for the theatre.
The Northeast Theatre (TNT) presented an Equity staged-reading of Mr. Putt's full-length comedy A DIFFERENT BLEND OF FRIENDSHIP in April 2004.
His radio-theatre mystery THE REIGN OF LEAVES was featured on "Shoestring Radio Theatre" a nationally syndicated radio drama series which broadcasts on over 111 stations across the U.S. and in Montreal, Canada. The story revolves around two siblings who must race against time to unravel a symbolic poem, which will enable them to rescue their abducted mother, before she meets with a horrible fate. It aired during June, 2004.
Barry's one-act drama THE PORCH, which deals with the dangers of complacency, had an Equity "script-in-hand" staged reading at the Goldberg Theatre (NYU/Tisch School of the Arts). It was part of their Undergraduate Ten-Minute Play Festival which ran from November 12 to November 16, 2003. It was also presented at the Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival in 2005.
His poem LIFE TRAIL was featured in the September, 2003 edition of "Coffee-zine Scene!" an e-zine published by Riprap Entertainment.
Mr. Putt's one-act farce MOTHER OF THE YEAR had a non-union showcase production at The Theatre-Studio, Inc. NYC in March 2003. This piece centers around a teen who attempts to get his bombastic mother elected 'Mother of the Year.'
Barry was commissioned to write the screenplay TEMPLE OF THE TIGER for Aananda Studio. The story revolves around an animal-activist who takes a pilgrimage to the world's largest man-eating tiger reserve of Sunderban, India in hope of a cure for her fatal illness. She ends up confronting the world's most treacherous creatures of all...humans.
GUTTER RAT, Barry's dark, one-act drama about the loss of innocence was showcased at the Theatre-Studio, Inc. in the fall of 2002. It revolves around a jaded troll-like man who cons a do-gooder into his lair then toys with his mind to see if he'll make a good pet.
His one-act play ALL IS FAIR IN SHOW BUSINESS was produced April, 2002 in 'The Playwright's Express' sponsored by FirstStage of Hollywood. This comedy focuses on a senior citizen, Abigal who is elated upon landing her first acting assignment, a juicy role as a TV commercial spokeswoman. All goes awry, however, when an envious sophisticate steals the part away. Left playing an extra in the commercial, Abigail must fight to prove she's the best spokeswoman for the job.
Barry's children's story A NUTTY TALE has been published in Riprap Entertainment's E-zine Coffee E-zine. The story centers around baby squirrels, Hazel, Pistachio, and Hickory, who embark on a wacky, forest adventure which leads them to realize the importance of listening to their mother's advice. This piece was also published by Candlelight Stories, an online children's story publication.
His poetry collection PERSPECTIVES, which explores life through, humor, imagery, symbolism, and desire was published by Hungry Publishing, LLC in February, 2001.
The suspense screenplay EVIL AWAKENED (by Barry M. Putt, Jr. & Ike Evans) was awarded first place in the BDR 2000 New Millennium Screenplay Contest 2001.
Barry's short film BLEEDING THROUGH was released in December 2000 by VTV Productions.
He co-wrote the stage play THE CIRCLE IN PROGRESS which was performed at the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival in 1997. His one-act play INTERPRETATIONS was performed Off-Broadway, in 1998, at the Theatre-Studio, Inc.
A member of organizations such as The Dramatists Guild and ARTC, Barry has studied stage and screenwriting at the college and private level. He received his BFA degree (with honors) in Dramatic Writing from NYU/Tisch School of the Arts. Barry's screenplay THE CHARMER placed third in the BDR 2000 New Millennium Screenplay Contest 1999. Additionally, his essay "In the Middle" won the 1998 New Jersey Wordsmiths' Competition. Barry currently teaches TV and play writing courses at Brookdale Community College in New Jersey.
